Gigi Hadid has had an amazing year, walking the Victoria’s Secret runway alongside her sister Bella, to hosting the American Music Awards, to topping year-end lists like Instagram’s person who gained the most followers. But there are still moments when the model is caught off guard by her success — and one of them was last night in London when she was at the 2016 British Fashion Awards.
Gigi was in attendance to win the International Model of the Year award (a category sister Bella and friend Kendall Jenner were also nominated in), an honor that’s previously been bestowed upon Kate Moss, Georgia May Jagger, and Cara Delevingne, and she couldn’t hold back the tears while accepting it. After Donatella Versace presented the award to Gigi, she got emotional during her acceptance speech. “This is so crazy,” she said before acknowledging her record-setting fans on Instagram and other social platforms. “I just want to say that I know that I’m in the generation of social media, and I’m so blessed for that, but the fashion industry is my family, and you guys are the ones that I’m here for.”
Gigi also gave shout-outs to iconic fashion photographer Bruce Weber and famed stylist, editor, and aesthete Carine Roitfeld. “To Bruce [Weber] and Carine [Roitfeld], who started my career when no one else knew who I was, I can’t believe that I’m sitting her with you today,” she said. “To everyone, who has been so genuine, and looked beyond what the rest of the world looked for, that has meant so much to me. You guys know who I am, and that to me means so much, so thank you for inspiring me, and for teaching me to look beyond — and for being the most amazing industry I could ever ask to be a part of; you guys are a dream come true. So thank you so much.”
